Oppurtunities for science students

Science students now have no reasons to worry as there are plenty of opportunities for you to get into the field of research and preserve the enthusiasm. I will soon bring you informations about the new ones. But here are the major oppurtunities.

INSPIRE programme (DST):

INSPIRE programme consists of wide range of fellowships and scholarships to motivate students towards science. Applications are called every year and aelected students are awarded a monthly stipend of Rs. 5000 and an annual support around Rs. 20000.
*Students who have passed X board examination and XII or equivalent with high scores(should be in top 1% in the respective board) are eligible to receive the scholarship.
*All KVPY fellows and all those who are selected to IISERs will receive the scholarship automatically.

KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanic Protsahan Yojana):

KVPY is a fellowship program funded py INSPIRE programme of DST, Govt of India which is meant to encourage students who want to pursue education and research in Basic Science and Engineering. Students are selected in 3 different schemes SA, SB (Written examination) and SP (Creative Science based project). Students in I or II PUC, I or II BSc or Engineering or Int.MSc or MSc or MBBS can apply. Selected candidates will be called for an interview and if selected will get a fellowship of Rs. 4000- 7000 with an additional annual support. Applications are usually called on May or June every year.

SRPF is a summer research fellowship awarded to bright undergraduate and MSc students by JNCASR. Around 5000 students apply every year for 120 fellowships awarded. Selected students are placed in research groups at the centre or elsewhere in India. They are also given with a monthly stipend of Rs. 5000. Eligibility and application details are available in JNCASR website.

Science Academies' Summer Research Fellowships:

Indian Academy of Sciences(Bangalore), Indian National Science Academy(New Delhi) and The National Academy of Sciences (Allahabad) offer several summer fellowships to students and teachers to work with scientists associated with the academies. Raman Research Institute:
The Visiting Student Programme is aimed at offering research experience to highly motivated students who are presently pursuing their undergraduate or Masters’ studies. The Visiting Student Programme runs throughout the year. Students within 1 or 2 years of the end of their BSc, BE and MSc; particularly those students with the intention of pursuing research as a career are encouraged to apply. Students from Bangalore colleges, who are keen to utilize their week-ends and vacation periods for acquiring research experience at RRI, will also be considered. Students will be offered: a) Sleeper-class train fare to Bangalore from their place of stay, and also the return fare, for a single person; b) Allowance of Rs. 3000/- (Rupees three thousand only) per month of the visit duration; and c) Institute accommodation (generally on a shared-room basis) free of cost.

Students from Bangalore will be offered the above Allowance (Rs. 100/- per day) and, additionally, a support of Rs. 800/- (Rupees eight hundred only) per month towards local transportation, where appropriate.

How to Apply

A potential VSP student is expected to go through the RRI homepage to get an idea of the research interests of the research staff (postdoctoral fellows and members of the research faculty). Then he/she should e-mail directly the research staff member of his/her choice seeking possibility of working on a project with him/her. The e-mail should contain information on the student's academic background and the kind of work that he/she would like to pursue.

The student should arrange for recommendation letters to be e-mailed directly to the relevant staff member only if the staff member requests recommendation letters to be sent to him/her. An incoming VSP student is expected to carry an ID card when he/she comes to the RRI.

National centre for biological science, Bengaluru:

Detailed information can be obtained from www.ncbs.res.in . The training program at NCBS is open to interested and motivated pre-doctoral candidates and usually comprisesM.Sc. students between their first and second years. Many students also do their Masters projects here. Engineering and medical students are also encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted all through the year. Individual faculty members choose the students they will accommodate in their laboratories. Many of the Centre's trainees find their research experience invaluable. Perhaps the most tangible benefits of this program are manifest in the number of such trainees who are enrolled for a degree in the best research laboratories within the country and outside.

Approximately 25 students from around the world will be accepted to the 10-week summer program to work with senior Laboratory staff members on independent research projects, specifically in
areas of:
Cancer Biology
Neuroscience
Plant Biology
Cellular and Molecular Biology
Genetics
Macromolecular Structure

NIMHANS:

As most of researchers in biomedical field find difficulty in understanding and doing Statistics for their work, Biostatistics department of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (NIMHANS) has initiated 2 days course on Basic medical statistics and Statistical Package for Social Science software usage. Those who are interested please visit website

The summer training is a sort of research protocol demonstrations in various departments (Cell & Molecular Biology, Biochemistry & Genetics, Tissue culture, Animal lab) along with interactive lectures and discussion. The training would facilitate research aptitude and encourage you to take-up biomedical research as a career. The training has a nominal fee structure of Rs.10,000/- per student and placements will be offered 'first come –first served' basis. Institue advises you to make an advance payment so that it will help their administrative procedures and restrict placements only for 20 students per batch (May 15th – June 15th 2010 & June 15th - July 15th 2010). Advance payment should be made by DD favouring ‘Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, payable at Chennai. Along with the payment, you need to submit your C.V. and bonafide certificate from your HOD.
The deadline for the submission of the application (CV) along with fee is May 10th 2010 (May-June batch) & May 30th 2010 for (June- July batch) . However, as mentioned before, once they enroll 20 students per batch, it would not be possible to accommodate more students. On completion of the summer training, students will be provided with appropriate certificate from the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation. Students outside Chennai need to take care of accommodation themselves. If you need any further clarification contact
